The Rational Optimist
There’s always something to complain about. We have made so much progress as a human race and yet we find so many things that aren’t working or are inconvenient to us. In The Rational Optimist by Matt Ridley, everything is put into perspective. He gives a thorough history lesson about the advancement of the human race and why it happened. What we’ve achieved as a race is amazing and so is the way we exponentially grow every year.
Self-Reliance
Before Emerson passed away in 1882 he wrote essays titled "Self-Reliance", "The Over-Soul", "Circles", "The Poet", "Experience", and "Nature". It’s amazing to look back at his essays and compare our world now to a 19th-century one.
Touchy Subjects
The Implicit Association Test (IAT) and the Exhausted Minority were two things that Jesse Singal referred to while talking to Joe Rogan on his podcast. I hadn’t come across either of them before, so I decided to look into them.
Agency
Just to be clear agency is the ability to act. We have many conversations about how we want a particular life for ourselves or how we want to change our current situation, but nothing seems to change. There’s something holding us back, preventing us from learning and growing into the person we want to become. Basically, most people want to make some form of change in their lives that they haven’t made yet.
1729.com
I’m talking about the ultra-informative and proactive newsletter started by Balaji S. Srinivasan called 1729.com. Balaji is “an angel investor and entrepreneur. Formerly the CTO of Coinbase and General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz, he was also the co-founder of Earn.com (acquired by Coinbase), Counsyl (acquired by Myriad), Teleport (acquired by Topia), and Coin Center.”
The Case Against Education
I have always felt a bit strange about education and it seems like most people do too. After being educated for 18 years you begin to question whether it was all useful or what the purpose of all of it is. Education is a necessity to put us in good stead for the rest of our lives but does education even do this?
How I Built This - Guy Raz
I’ve always been interested in entrepreneurship and how successful people have made it to where they are today. Each person’s story has a unique twist with similar underlying lessons that can be taken from each story. Going over numerous success stories, I hope some of these ways of thinking and how to approach business are being etched in my brain.
The Human Library
It’s known as “Menneskebiblioteket” in Danish which is where it was started. Ronni and Dany Abergel started the project in 2000 for the Roskilde Festival in Copenhagen. The idea is to create a safe place for open dialogue. Volunteers are ‘open books’ and you can borrow them to ask them anything you’d like, giving everyone the opportunity to unjudge someone.
